Nov 3, 2010….3 mile ‘partial tempo’….42*….gear: headband, LS shirt, tank top, gloves, chill chasers, shorts, hydration belt, music…..UPPER BODY

This is the middle of week 9 of my 10 week plan.  This week I have a 5, 3, and 8 scheduled. But I am going to start running 2 consecutive days a week, so I took 1 mile off of my 5 mile run and only did 4 miles, then today I did 3, and then tomorrow I will do that lost 1 mile and add 1 to it. I am going to run it at recovery pace and then come home and finish up my cardio with a 20-30min elliptical workout.

So, today I wanted to run a bit a tempo run, but not for the whole 3. I had planned to do a 1 mile warm up at recovery pace, then a 1 mile tempo, then a 1 mile cool down at recovery pace.  So, mile 1 was run in 11:10, then mile 2 I ran in 9 minutes. At the end of that mile I was feeling so good that I decided to not completely slow down to recovery pace.  But at the end of the run, I found out I ran that last mile at the same pace as my tempo mile! I thought it would be slower for sure.  It’s encouraging to see that I am able to run 2 9 min miles in a row and still feel like I have gas in the tank!

I did upper body weights today. I am still using just 5 and 8lb dumbells but I think hubby is going to need to get me a set of 10, or at least 1 10lb-er as I need a little something heavier to do my back work and my triceps…

Nov 2, 2010….elliptical 41 minutes-9 miles….lower body

Woke up a little early today so was able to do a little more time on the elliptical. I would like to start getting up early enough to get an hour in.

Did lower body ‘The Firm’ Body Sculpt video. Finally worked my way up to using 5lbs for squats, the fanny lifter AND lunges.  My hammies were a little sore at night time, but it feels good to have moved ‘up a notch’ =)

Have been eating GOBS of leftover Halloween candy the last few days.  Thankfully, its almost all gone so the binge has an end in sight =)

Nov 1, 2010….4 miles….43:50 (10:56 pace)….40*…gear: headband, tank top, LS shirt, gloves, chill chasers, shorts, hydration belt, music (though I did without the music for a good portion…ran at recovery pace

Wow, I can NOT believe it is November already!

I have jumped back into week 9 of my 10 week 15K plan, only I am doing it a little differently.  I have scheduled, a 5, 3, and 8 mile run, but I want to ease SLOWLY into running 2 consecutive days a week so today I did 4 miles, then Wed I will do 3 and then Thursday, I will do the mile I missed today, plus 1, so 2 miles total for that day.  I am trying to figure out how I should do these runs. At what pace, what order etc… but I am going to try to do all my runs easy this week and next while I am easing into running 2 days in a row-so no speedwork.

I have been looking into trying to do more of my runs accoring to the McMillan running calculator which says my recovery runs should be between 11:44-12:14 per mile.  I will do a recovery run the Monday after a race or long run. So today, I tried to run REAL easy.  So easy in fact that I was able to breathe in and out thru my nose the whole run, except on hills. I was pretty sure I was doing an 11 min per mile pace and that felt REALLY slow to me, so I can imagine if I had tried to run it in 12 min per mile!

I ran without my music for a good portion of this run and actually really liked it.  I thought ‘wow, my breathing isnt annoying me!’, then I remember that I was breathing thru my nose and not huffing like I usually do =)  I stripped my LS shirt of 5 min into my run when I got too warm, but about 3 min later i noticed my arms felt tingly. Not cold, but when I felt them with my hands they were really cold. Weird. So every few minutes I would rub them with my hands to get the tingly feeling to go away.  So next time, I may try to just wear the LS shirt and no tank top when it is around 40* and see how that goes.

I have realized how horrible I am at pacing myself so I am hoping to get a Garmin in the future to help me with that =)

Red Kettle Run 5K 10/30/10

What a great, GREAT day!!! I ran my 3rd 5K race this morning and was SHOCKED to see that I beat my old 5K PR by 1:30 finishing at 27:30!!!….It was 48* at race time…gear: LS shirt (stripped before the start of the race), headband, tank top, shorts

Hubby ran with me-this was his first race ever and he did awesome. TOTALLY could have taken this race MUCH faster, but he stayed with me and helped me push my pace a bit thru the whole race.  I need to build my lungs up as my legs could go and go and go but my lungs are screaming ‘What the heck are you doing????’   =)

Race started at 9am at Lake Z about a 7 minute drive from our house, however EVERY light on the way seemed bent on keeping me from getting there on time, BUT make it there we did, with about 10 minutes to spare.  The entry fee was 10 cans of food or $10 so we took our bags of good old chicken noodle soup to the check in area and we were given 2 raffle tickets at one table which you then had to take to another table to fill out a form and get your bib number.  I was #449 and hubby was #450 and if that is a reflection of the # of runners….WOW! This was the first year for this race so I didnt expect there to be that many people there!

Anyway, we get our bib numbers on and line up about 5 mintes before gun-time. Actually, it was ‘cow bell’ time.  Yep. They started the race with a cow bell =)  And we were off!

Started out too fast again…*sigh*  WHEN will I learn?  Anyway, at about 5min into the race we had a short hill (short in distance) and then about mile 2, another hill.  Bleh. I love running hills in training, but NOT in races.  I ALMOST waked, but pushed thru it.  I was pretty steady the whole race, and even thought there was no way I was going to break 30 minutes.  There were several times where hubby would go a little ahead of me and 1/2 the time I followed him, and the other 1/2 I was doing all I could just to keep up the momentum, so he would slow back down with me.  At about .30-.50 from the finishline, hubby asked if I wanted to pick up the pace til the finish. Well honestly, I had no idea how far we were from the finish so I shook my head no.  Then we rounded a bend (which was also a pretty steep downhill) and I saw the finish line roughly 50yds ahead of me. I saw the big clock at the finish at about 27 minutes and I think my eyes may have bugged out of my head.  So I turned on the rockets and blazed thru to the end.  Past a couple of grade school kids on that final stretch and made sure to turn around to stick my tongue out at them.  No, not really, but that WOULD have been funny. How DO these kids run 5K that fast like its NOTHING?  Not fair I tell ya….

We get to the end and hubby is pretty much still as fresh as a daisy and enjoying watching the people behind us finishing while I wait for the ‘Im gonna hurl’ feeling to pass.  Then I searched for a fellow Daily Mile friend who was participating as well.  Keeley is a sweetheart and I am so glad her and I finally got to meet in person (that’s her and I in the picture up top, she’s on the left, I’m on the right).

I was nervous about how I would do today since I slept pretty poorly last night and woke up earlier than I had planned (wanted to get up around 7:15, 7:30 but woke at 6:30 and could never fall back asleep).  I pretty much always run in the morning and never eat ahead of time so I didnt want to wake too early and give my body a chance to start realizing I wasnt feeding it! However, before my last 2 5K’s I would eat a few pringles about an hour before the race and that would be just a enough to stave off the hunger pangs. So I did that again today and all was well.

Hubby treated me to an early, and very TASTY lunch at Panera when we were done.  A smokehouse turkey tastes much better with the sweet taste of victory already on your tongue =)

Oct 26, 2010…elliptical….6mi -28:00…..lower body work

Worked thru 6 miles on the elliptical. Meant to get up at 7 but must have snoozed my alarm and didnt get up til 7:20 so I had to cut the workout short to be sure I could get in my lower body work and a shower before the minions awoke.  I started to use a little heavier weight for my lower body work. To start I was using just 3lbs for everything….then I started last week to use 5lbs just for the squats and 3s for everything else.  This time I did 5s for everything except lunges.  I plan to start using 5s for lunges as well next week.

2mi tempo…..17:40 (!!!)  splits were 9:20/8:20….temp: 43* and gusty winds….gear: headband, LS shirt, tank top, running tights, shorts, gloves, hydration belt, music

Started out at 7am. It gets darker and darker every morning-I dont like it!  I started out speedy and was a little afraid I couldnt maintain my speed (which isnt even that fast to begin with). The first mile was SO windy (towards me) that it felt like someone was tuggin on the back of my shirt trying to stop my advancement, but I would not be stopped!  =)  At .75 miles in I had to pull back the pace and take a breather. Then around 1mile I picked up speed and when I had around a 1/2 mile left, I really threw it all out there.  I was probably quite a mess when I was done what with all the huffing and puffing, but wow! I was SO super pleased with my time!  I warmed up around 5 min into my run, but due to the way I mapped this route, I was on a super busy street and didnt feel like wrestling out of my LS shirt, so I just pulled up the sleeves and planned to take it off when I got onto a side street, but by that point I was so focused on blazin’, that I didnt want to take the time to slow down enough to get it off. It was the first thing to go after I stopped =)

I got home and jumped on the elliptical (14 minutes, 3 miles) as I just didnt feel like 17 minutes of running was really going to cut it for todays cardio. I actually REALLY enjoyed doing the elliptical after my run as my legs and lungs felt throughly warmed up and ready to go.

After the elliptical, I did upper body work which felt great. I love the changes I am seeing in my body!

Oct 25, 2010….3 miles….29:40…53*….gear: LS shirt, tank top, shorts, hydration belt, EXTRA tissue…. =)……upper body weights

I didn’t do any exercise yesterday, I was still mourning my run on Saturday. For some reason I was expecting to run it in about the same pace that I did my 6 miler (a 9:50 pace) but from what I hear-your long runs are suppose to be much slower than your ‘normal’ pace, so maybe my 9:50 pace for my 6 miler was a bit of an anomoly, who knows?  But I am fully recovered and am now looking thru a more optimistic view….instead of ‘wow, I wish I had run that faster’, I am now saying ‘wow, I ran almost EIGHT miles STRAIGHT with no walking!’ for me, that is a feat in and of itself and I need to remember that.  Its all about enjoying running (cuz I do) and not making it all about times and paces as that has a possibility of getting me down. I just need to focus on completing the distance I have set out to do and enjoying it while I do it.

That said, this morning’s run ALSO felt off!  I think getting up and getting ready when its still dark out, and then starting out under overcast skies just makes me feel all ‘blah-sy’ and makes me want to crawl back in bed and pull the covers over my head.  I probably could have done without the LS shirt as I ended up taking it off 3 minutes into my run (its usually 5 minutes in), but I’m a baby and HATE to be cold during my warm up =)

I switched my race plans.  I had planned to run a 15K on Sunday thru the local YMCA Masters Classic (doesn’t that just SOUND intimidating?! Especially for a new and SLOW runner), but that last long run had me feeling very discouraged. So I switched races and am now doing a 5K on Saturday instead. This race will be in the morning so I feel much better about that. Plus, entry fee is only 10 cans of food or $10! Can’t beat that price =)

Hubby was suppose to run with me, but I think he might be out of the running now. He plays competitive soccer and they had a game on Sunday with no subs (which is really a moot point as he almost ALWAYS plays the whole game anyway) and he got kicked in the inner heel and it made him extend his knee outwards, so he did something to the inside of his knee =( He said he’s had it before but he doesnt remember how long it takes to heal up. He has a soccer game on Thursday too (the Championship of the season) that I dont think he’ll play in either.  I am SUPER bummed he cant run with me as this would have been our first race together, but I am happy to know that I will be meeting some of my ‘Daily Mile’ friends there (I LOVE that site).

Wednesday’s a 2 miler and then the race on Saturday. I have stepped out of my 15K plan for this week and will jump back into it next week with a 5, 2 and 8 miler. For the 8 miler, I am actually going to run to a friends house to drop something off and then run back and around my neighborhood.  I will be chanting to myself ‘enjoy the journey enjoy the journey its not about the pace its not about the pace’…..     =)

Oct 23, 2010….7.8 miles in 1 hour 22 minutes (pace 10:30)….7:15am….60*…gear: tank top, shorts, music, hydration belt

Wow. This run kicked my rear.  I am a little displeased with my time. But I never really ‘felt’ it during this run, the whole thing just felt a little off.  It had made me re-think doing the 15K on the 31st.  I think I am going to instead, do a 5K on the 30th with my hubby.  It was 60 but slightly humid as it had rained last night. I think the trees are gettin’ jiggy with releasing all their lovely allergen causing goodness as I was sniffing the WHOLE. RUN. Yeah, that was fun. Gotta remember to bring lots more tissue next time.

My knees were achy at the end of the run and my feet are a bit sore right now, 2 hours later.  I am going to try to take it easy today.  Hoping to get some upper body work in later and then abs tonight.

I know have new respect for anyone who runs anything over 8 miles!!
